Cricket actually started offering this service a few months ago. The service is $3 a month for unlimited 411 calls. That is a smoking deal considering that 411 calls typically cost about $1.39 per call.

For the Holidays, Cricket is offering a unique twist on this feature. The deal is that when you sign up you get a 60 day free trial. If you want to keep the service you can just start paying for it in the third month or if you don't want it just call up Cricket to cancel. It is very easy, and totally risk free.

Cell phone + Driving = Verbal Warning!

We recently moved store locations and that has kept me really busy! It has been a bit of a stress but our new location rocks! We are now right on an extremely busy street so we should generate a lot more traffic. Being "right on" the street provided me with my latest topic to write about. About 3 hours ago we noticed that people were being pulled over all over the place. About every two minutes there are cop cars on both sides of the street with people pulled over. In fact, we have had them right in front of our store about 3 or 4 times within the last hour. At first I thought that the cops were just focusing on this area for speeding today, but then one of my co-workers left the store and called me up saying he was just pulled over. I said that he wasn't speeding, but he was TALKING ON HIS CELL PHONE! He was given a ticket but the cop took down all his info and gave him a warning. He said that the one warning was all he was going to get. Next time it would result in a ticket! I've heard people say things now and again about it being against the law to talk on your phone in the car, but now I have proof. So here's my advice to everyone - Buy a hands free, headset! I don't know for sure if those are legal, but at least they free up both your hands.

Motorola W315

We finally have another phone being offer my Motorola - the Motorola W315 a.k.a "The Pebble." This phone is not going to be as loaded as some of the other new phones coming out at the moment, but it is a solid phone. Good quality, durable, and packed with basic features that make it an easy to use phone. We started selling it at the end of last week and it seems to be getting a really good response from customers. I have copied some of its specs for those of you who are interested to read:

The clock feature on the external display can be set to 3 different modes; Normal (digital date & time), Big Time (enlarged digital time), and analog clock. In your menu, select “Settings”, “Initial Setup”, “Time and Date”, Subclock, then choose the desired clock display option.

The W315 supports Cricket Clicks, Mobile WEB, Travel Time, and textmessaging. The W315 has a vibrant internal 128 x 160 65K CSTN color display and unique external 96 x 32 vertical display. Additional features include integrated speaker phone, voice activated dialing, predictive text input, contact list, incoming call indicator, and more. This handset is hearing aid compliant with a M3 rating. With the W315, you can get the job done with style and quality that you expect from Motorola.

This GOOD category handset has a retail price of $139.99

It's nice to finally have another phone from Motorola. Their phones generally seem to be high quality with a lot of really cool cutting edge features. The Pebble should be a really good phone for Cricket.

Christmas = Cheap Cricket Phones

So the big question customers always ask me is "What is your cheapest phone?" Generally Cricket always offers a phone for $100 or less. That always includes the first 30 of service so it's not a bad deal. But this Christmas season, Cricket has a deal that is pretty sweet. The company is offering a "Buy one get one half off" special through the end of 2006 whenever you are activating new lines of service. Half off on any phone is pretty sweet, especially if you are buying 2 of our UTStarcom CDM 7025's.

These are Cricket's basic, introductory phone for the season. All things considered, it is a pretty good phone. It doesn't have all the extravagant features that the more expensive phones have (such as a camera, Web portal, external display, Bluetooth capabilities), but it is definitely a high quality phone. Cricket is currently selling them for $99.99 on a new activation with a $30 mail-in rebate. So if you buy 2 and take advantage of the Christmas offer, the 2nd is only $50 with a $30 mail-in rebate. That gives you a total of only $90 for 2 phones. Not a bad deal!

Cricket phones that are Hearing Aid Compatible (HAC)

We recently received an email regarding a new Hearing Aid Compatibility rating (HAC T4). Personally, I do not understand all the technicalities of HAC, but just so Cricket users know we do offer two phones with this capability – the Nokia 6265i and the RAZR V3c. Here are all the HAC ratings that I am aware of for current Cricket handsets (M rating is in reference to 2005 FCC HAC regulations and T rating is in reference to 2006 FCC HAC regulations):

Nokia 6265i – HAC M3 & T4

V3c RAZR – HAC M3 & T4

Slider Remix – HAC M3

KX9e – HAC M3

CDM7025 – HAC M3

The Nokia 6265 and the RAZR are both in our “Best” category for cell phones. Cricket has brought back the $5 monthly discount for customers on Automatic Bill Payment (ABP). Cricket used to have that in the past but took it away back in April of 2005. For those who don't know what that means, here's a quick run down.

Set up with Cricket to have your monthly recurring bill automatically pulled from a debit or credit card. You have to have an actual card associated with your account. Typically you cannot just give your routing number and account number. At least that's how it is at my store. We have to enter in the card number.

If you set up ABP at the time your account is activated the payments will start coming out on your first bill.

If you set up ABP in the middle of a billing cycle it is a bit different. It can take up to 30 days for the ABP to be set up so the next payment you have should be paid manually. After that the payments will be taken out automatically.

Cricket makes a pull on your card about 5 days before the bill is due. So if your payments are due on the 15th your card will have a pull on it on the 10th. Cricket does this to ensure that your card is still valid. If for some reason your card is declined, then Cricket will send you a text message letting you know that the payment was not received and that you need to pay it manually.

Like I mentioned, the exciting part about all of this is that you get $5 off on your bill each month. I'm not sure how long this is sticking around so I would go into a store and set it up ASAP. I have had my wife on ABP the whole time I have worked for Cricket and it has been great. Never a problem with them charging us a weird amount and never a problem with the card being declined. In my opinion it is the best way to go.

Moconews.net and Nokia Data Kit

I received a comment recently from someone who got the Nokia 6265. They said they really like it but that the data kit they wanted costs $50. For those that don't know, data kits include the cable to connect your phone to a USB port and the software to manage your phone on a computer. The typical software application allows you to transfer pictures and videos, store music (mp3's and aac's), and store contact information. My suggestion to the person with the new Nokia is to try and shop around a bit. We sell our data kits for 39.99. I know that's still pricey but at least it's $10 cheaper. Another suggestion - if you buy a micro SD memory card at the same time you buy the data kit you may be able to get a bundled discount. Something like $5 off each item when bought together. If you are buying the data kit you will definitely want a memory card to store your music on. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit.

One other note. I've been checking out other blogs that mention things related to Cricket and cell phones in general. I came across a really good site, www.moconews.net, which is dedicated to exclusively covering mobile content. It was a cool site and I will probably continue to check it out to learn stuff about the phones and services available.

Cool Nokia 6265 commercial

Two posts in one day! Yeah, I am starting to really enjoy this blogging stuff. Anyway, I was checking out some stuff online about the Nokia 6265 and I found this really cool commercial Nokia is running in Canada. Just follow the link ...

http://www.nokia.ca/english/products/6265i/msite/video/30_sec.mov

I found it on a website dedicated to discussing cell phones. http://www.mobilitywatch.com/. And, My what a phone it is!! We are getting the Nokia 6265i which is easily the best phone Cricket has ever carried in my opinion. Here is a picture of what the phone looks like.

This is going to be a really sweet phone. Here are some of the specs:

Large 2" QVGA display 262k color

2.0 MP camera with dedicated camera key, flash, and 4X zoom in landscape mode

Camcorder functionality - Up to almost 20 minutes if you dedicate all your built-in memory to this function!

24 MB shared dynamic memory + removable Mini SD (up to 2 GB)

Bluetooth v 1.2

Handsfree Speaker

Voice commands, voice dialing, voice recording

Integrated FM Stereo radio and AAC music player

Openwave 6.2.3; WAP (Web Access Portal) 2.0

Java MIDP 2.0

Those are most of the really unique things this phone will do. Besides that, it is a Slide-Phone style, which typically I'm not a big fan of. But this phone has a very unique slide feature in that the slide mechanism seems to be "spring-loaded" which gives is a sharp slide. Also, you do not have to slide the phone open to access a lot of the functions. Really the only reason you would ever have to open it is to dial or text.

Overall, it is a really slick phone. Like I said, in my opinion it is the best phone Cricket has ever carried. We are all really excited about it! If you happen to get this phone and learn some of the cool things it does, please post a comment so we can all learn about it. Thanks!

Luke Johnson Experiment: A True Cricket Story

I was going to keep blogging about all the new changes but I came across a story that I had to insert today. This is a true story and it shows the really value of Cricket. Enjoy!

Luke Johnson Phone Experiment: 6,781 cell phone calls and counting
By Kelly Hill
Nov 2, 2006

Ordinary people like Luke Johnson sit at the intersection of social networking and the cell phone. Searching for something new that he could do involving video-sharing site YouTube.com, Johnson woke up one night with an idea: Why not post his cell-phone number on the Internet and see how many people were willing to call a complete stranger?

“I didn’t think anybody has ever put their cell-phone number on the Internet and asked basically the entire world to give them a call,” he said.

He woke his wife to tell her about the plan. “She thought I was nuts,” Johnson recalled.

Johnson, 26, went ahead with his social experiment anyway, and the Luke Johnson Phone Experiment was born. He posted a short video on the YouTube video-sharing site, listing his phone number and urging people to call him and pass the word on to their friends.

Before posting the video, however, Johnson planned ahead and bought a second cell phone to use exclusively for the project. Johnson said that he already has service with Verizon Wireless, but he wanted to keep the project-related calling costs under control. He also didn’t want to sign a long-term contract for an experiment that might not pan out.

“I knew that if this doesn’t take off, I don’t want to be stuck with a contract,” he said. So Johnson, who lives in Gilbert, Ariz., (outside of Phoenix) and works for a for-profit school, checked into Leap Wireless International Inc.’s Cricket service, and eventually signed up for a flat-rate, $45-per-month plan.

Johnson’s YouTube video, clocking in at one minute, 12 seconds, simply shows him talking to the camera, holding his phone and explaining his scheme.

“I don’t care why you call, and I don’t care what you say, but I’ll answer as many calls as I can,” Johnson says in the video. “My goal is to have my phone ringing off the hook day and night, and to receive calls from people all over the world.”

And that has been exactly what he received. For the first week, Johnson said he was averaging between two and four hours a sleep a night as he tried to cope with the flood of phone calls.

“The calls just started coming every half-second,” he recalled. “I’d be talking to someone and I’d get beeped in by about four other people—and they were short conversations as it was!”

As of early this week, Johnson had recorded 6,781 phone calls from more than a dozen countries. International callers, he said, have generally “been good about knowing when it’s daylight here,” and his favorites are calls from the United Kingdom who sign off with “Cheers!”

Johnson said that most people are encouraging—even if they do question his sanity. “Most people say, ‘Are you nuts?’” Johnson said. “I’m like, ‘A little bit, yeah, maybe.’ About 75 percent say, ‘This is genius, man, you’re brilliant! Keep it going!’”

He said that after the first major response, the calls have been coming in waves as word of the video makes its way to a new radio station or Web site.

“I won’t say it’s been an easy experiment. It has been really taxing on me at times. Especially the first week, I was exhausted,” Johnson said. Still, he added, every time he thinks about calling it quits, “someone else gives me a call about it, asking about it. I think I’ll just keep going until it fizzles.”

Johnson said he recently received his first phone bill from Cricket—and, true to advertising, it was $45. He said he’d been nervous about whether international calls might affect the bill, but those fears turned out to be groundless.

“The bill’s been where they said it would be, so I was pretty happy about that,” he said. So at the very least, Johnson won’t have to worry about paying overage for his 15 minutes of wireless fame.

Cricket has gone Nationwide!!

The rumors I was hearing are all true for the most part. Cricket is now an official Nationwide cell phone provider. The old perception people had about Cricket "only being a local phone that died every time you left your area" is going to change. I have decided that over the next week or two, I will highlight the new plans and new phones that Cricket is introducing. Today I will talk about the two newest plans.

Unlimited Nationwide - $60/mo.

This is going to be the "Grand-daddy" of the new Cricket plans. Here is the breakdown on what is being offered.

Unlimited anytime minutes

Unlimited text, picture, and instant messaging

Unlimited domestic long distance

National extended calling area in all Cricket markets

300 nationwide roaming minutes

Voice mail, caller id, call waiting, and 3-way calling

The biggest advantage of this plan, obviously, is the 300 minutes of nationwide roaming. That's 5 hours talk time nearly anywhere in America. I've previously blogged about Travel Time and that's exactly what this is. This is going to be huge for anybody that travels frequently. Unlimited minutes when you are home and 5 hours anywhere else. Pretty sweet!

The other really cool, new feature is the "national extended calling area in all Cricket market." What this means is that your Cricket phone will now have unlimited minutes and texting in any other Cricket market in the US. So if you set up Cricket in the Salt Lake market you can take your phone to Phoenix (where Cricket is as well) and have unlimited service. Cricket is currently in 42 other markets and they have big plans to grow over the next couple of years. Here is a link to see a map of where else Cricket is: http://www.mycricket.com/coverage/.

Unlimited Access Plus - $50/mo.

This is Cricket's other new plan. Here is a rundown of what it offers:

Unlimited anytime minutes

Unlimited text, picture, and instant messaging

Unlimited domestic long distance

National extended calling area in all Cricket markets

Voice mail, caller id, call waiting, and 3-way calling

Unlimited WAP (Web Access Portal) storefront

This plan is very similar to the $60 plan, but you just do not have any roaming minutes included. You still have unlimited Cricket service in ANY market though which is really cool. You also get the WAP feature. I do not have time to talk about that yet, but it is an awesome feature and I will go over it on another day.

So there are the two newest plans and all I can say is that the other cell phone providers out there better watch out. Cricket is raising the industry standards and it will be interesting to see what kind of an impact it in the future.

Big Changes Starting November

I cannot give out all the details yet, but Cricket is coming out with some major changes to kick off November. I have a big training meeting on Tuesday to explain all the changes but so far here is a little bit of what I know.

Cricket is changing from being a regional cell phone provider to becoming a Nationwide provider.

Cricket is going to change and enhance a lot of its current plans to include newer features such as WAP (Web Access Portal) and Travel Time.

Cricket will be greatly improving on the line of cell phones it is currently selling. We are hearing rumors of companies like Nokia and Motorola that are going to be introducing new phones for Cricket.

That's about all I can really say right now. There are other rumors floating around but I don't want to say anything until I know for sure what is going on. Overall, though, it looks like a lot of really cool things which is going to make Cricket very competitive with the big companies.

Dashboard Confessional

So today I'm going to deviate a bit from the Cricket routine and write about the amazing Dashboard Confessional concert I went to on Monday night. Dashboard is pretty much my favorite band so I was stoked when I found out that they were finally coming to Utah. It has been over 2 years since they were out here so I was at SmithsTix the minute concert tickets went on sale. We had pretty good seats (9th row) which were great because we were really close to the stage but we didn't have to fight the crowds in the pit. The night started with Chris coming out by himself dressed like a bum. He pulled out the acoustic and played 3 songs and then went back stage. Then Brand New played. I'm not really a fan but they were alright if you like them. They had 2 songs that I thought were pretty cool. Besides that I thought that they were just loud. After they finished Dashboard came out and completely rocked the place! It was such an adrenaline rush when they started with "Don't Wait!" The whole night was simply amazing. One cool part was when Chris played "Dusk and Summer" by himself. He had everyone in the audience pull out there cell phone and open it up so the lights were on. It was a really cool sight. Before their encore they played an amazing version of "Stolen" which is my favorite song for the moment. There encore consisted of "Vindicated" and "Hands Down," two very solid songs. Overall it was the best concert I have ever been to! To make some type of Cricket reference, I have bought the ringtone "Stolen" and "Vindicated" from Cricket Clicks and they are what I am currently using.

1-800-CRICKET

Well I suppose that most Cricket users out there are fairly familiar with 1-800-CRICKET, the customer service hotline. Over the couple of years I have worked as a Cricket dealer, I have heard more complaints about 1-800-CRICKET than probably anything else. And generally the #1 complaint is the difficulty in being able to get a hold of a live representative. Personally, I feel like the customer service hotline is one of Cricket's biggest weaknesses, but I'm going to give all of you the lastest info on how to actually speak to a real person when you call in.

1. "All phone trees end in a live person" - These were the exact words my supervisor told me. Now I am assuming that this means that no matter what menu option you enter, the last option offered to you will get you on the phone with a live rep. I know for a fact that this will work when you go under Billing. What you do is press 2 for Billing, then 3 to speak to a rep. That the process I always go through to get someone.

2. "A customer is only allowed to reach a live person 7 times within 35 days."

3. "Only the first time a customer is hot-lined (service shut off) they can talk to a live rep."

Now I personally have a problem with #2 and #3. It seems to me that if your service is off, something out of the ordinary happened and you would need to talk to customer service about it. Furthermore, why in the world are they puting a limit on the number of times you can speak to a rep?! 7 times in 35 days is a lot of times calling up, but you would think that they would be willing to help out whenever needed as long as it kept the customer happy. Kind of dumb I think. If a customer needed help I wouldn't restrict the number of times they could come into my store within a month. I understand the logistic side of things, but I still think it is a bit lame.

Anyway, definitely pay attention to #1. Going the route through Billing will always get you a live rep as long as your service is still on.

International Text Messaging

Today’s post is going to be relatively short, but I thought I would mention something about International Text Messaging. Most every Cricket customer is well aware of the unlimited text messaging to anyone in the US, but most people have no idea how international texting works. Here’s the rundown:

- Cricket customers can receive a text message from anyone in the world as much as they want for FREE!
- With US texting you also have unlimited outgoing text messages to Canada
- Outgoing text messages to Mexico are $.10 per text
- Outgoing text messages to any other country are $.15 per text

To send an international text you have to have money in your flex bucket.

One quick word of caution. While Cricket will do everything it can to send your text message, there is no guarantee that the international cell phone carrier will accept and complete the message. However, once Cricket has completed its part of sending the text the fee associated for sending the text will be charged, regardless of whether your international friend receives it or not. So be a little cautious in how many messages you send until you know that they are definitely being received. Once you are sure the go to town!

Google on your phone

Today I wanted to let everyone one in on a sweet service that most people have never heard of before. It is called Google SMS. (First of all SMS stands for Short Message Service which most of you probably better know as Text Messaging.) This service essentially allows cell phone users to text message Google and get quick info on various topics. It is a free service and if you have Cricket then the text messages are "free" as well since they are unlimited!

So what info can you get from Google? To be honest, I only use a handful of the many services they provide. I will tell you a little bit about the ones I use. But for a more comprehensive list I definitely recommend checking out their website at www.google.com/sms.

The service I use the most is local listings. This is especially helpful to get phone numbers or adresses of businesses around town. For example, whenever I am in the mood to order a pizza, instead of getting the yellow pages I just text Google (46645) "Pizza", "My Zipcode". Within a minute or two I receive multiple text messages of all the pizza places in my area with their phone numbers. I use this service every time I need to call a local business and it works great.

The other service I use a lot is to find out movie times. All you do is text Google the title of the movie you want to see, then your zipcode, and within a minute or two you have all the showtimes and addresses of places the movie is playing.

One additional tip - when you are using this service you have to turn off your signature if you automatically add one on to your text messages. I don't know why, but if you send a signature with the text it messes things all up.

Like I said, there are a lot of other features I do not use that are provided so check out the website and find out what cool stuff you can do with text messaging.

Cricket Clicks

Today I decided to explain a little bit about Cricket Clicks. Cricket Clicks is the menu on most of the newer phones which can be used to download applications directly onto the phone. On some of the older phones (like my Audiovox 8900) this menu is called BREW. Essentially Cricket Clicks is a type of web browser where specific sites can be accessed. These sites sell ringtones, games, wall papers, and other entertainment for your phone.

Probably my favorite part of Cricket Clicks is downloading ringtones. There are a lot of different sites available, but my two favorites are Real Tone Jukebox and Cricket Realtones. They are definitely the more expensive sites, but these sites offer the ringtones that sound like the stuff you will hear on the radio. The sound quality is really great and the selection is pretty decent. They may not have every single one of your favorite songs, but you will easily be able to find some high quality, cool stuff. For example, I just recently purchased some sweet ringtones on Real Tone Jukebox off of the new Dashboard Confessional cd.

The other ringtone site that is pretty cool is called FlixTones. On this site you can buy clips of movie quotes for your ringtone. The clips are really funny and the sounds quality is excellent. The only downside is that the selection of movies is fairly low. After buying about 6 Tommy Boy ringtones I had bought every single one I would ever want from the site. But they always get a good laugh out of other people so it was worth it.

I am always buying games on my phone as well. If anyone wants recommendations I can definitely let you know what I think. One recommendation is that about every other week there will be a game that will let you demo it for free. Most of these games you will only want to play once or twice so I would keep my eyes open for the free demos.

Overall, I have a lot of fun with Cricket Clicks. If you have any questions about it then let me know!

Flex Bucket

So a lot of people have been asking me lately what exactly Cricket's Flex Bucket is for. It's kind of detailed so I probably won't go over every single detail today. I think I will spread it over the next couple of days.

First of all, What is the Flex Bucket for? Well the Flex Bucket is a "bucket" of funds that customers can set aside for a number of extra features. The funds available in that bucket can be used for the following:

Cricket Clicks - Downloading games, ringtones, and wallpaper.

International minutes

International text messaging

US long distance minutes

Roaming minutes

Directory assistance calls

These extra features all work on a pre-pay basis. This means you have to add funds to your Flex Bucket prior to using the service. You can add money to your Flex Bucket by calling *PAY (729) on your cricket phone and paying with a credit card or you can stop into a payment center and pay with cash. Either way is pretty easy and the funds will stay in your Flex Bucket for up to a year so you can use them at your convenience.

Travel Time!

It seems like word is finally starting to spread around that Cricket is offering customers the ability to roam outside of their calling area. It's funny because this capability has been around since July 2005, but most customers just started finding out about it this summer. Anyway, the word is out and this feature is AWESOME!
The way it works is that you arrange to have roaming ("Travel Time") set up on your phone BEFORE you leave the calling area. Make sure it is before, because once you leave there is no way to add the feature. So you add the feature and get service pretty much anywhere in America. Essentailly we are using Verizon and Sprint towers so anywhere they get service, Cricket will get service.
Roaming rates with cell phone companies are traditionally very expensive. The industry average was hovering around $.70 per minute last summer. Fortunately, Cricket has reached an agreement with our roaming providers to offer "bundled" minutes at cheaper rates. As of yesterday, the official minute bundles are as follows:

$5 - 30 minutes
$10 - 70 minutes
$15 - 120 minutes

This makes roaming very affordable and very simple. You pick the bundle(s) before you leave and then once the minutes are up the phone stops calling. This prevents anyone from accidentally racking up a huge roaming bill. If you are roaming and begin to approach your minute limit you can do one of two things. First, you can call customer service and add another (DIFFERENT) bundle of minutes. Second, you can add money to your flex bucket and use roaming minutes from that. The minutes pulled from your flex bucket are $.39 per minute so they are quite a bit more than the bundles, but they at least offer an alternative if you find yourself in a bind.
Overall, this roaming feature will offer a solution to a lot of customer's problems. The great thing about the feature is that you can either set it up to be a recurring monthly thing if you travel frequently, or you can add the feature before you leave the area and then cancel it when you return. Because there are no contracts it is totally up to the customer!

Hello Cricket Users!

Hello All!
